What we do in our kitchen to help the environment

In our home we spend a lot of time in our kitchen, there's always cooking or cleaning to do with a family of 7. So I felt it was a good place to start in terms of becoming more eco-friendly. Here is a list of a few things we do in our kitchen to save the environment.

1. We bought a big loofah, cut it into slices about 6 cm wide and use it as a sponge for washing our dishes with. It works great, it's not too rough and not too soft. It creates a lather of soap, and we are very happy with it.

2. We compost our vegetable scraps, egg peels etc. We placed a (bottom-less) compost bin right next to our orange tree and our tree has never looked healthier. We look forward to getting some good black compost out of that.

3. Somehow we always have piles of old t-shirts and worn out kids clothes to get rid of. So anything in good condition gets given away, anything that is not wearable, I cut into small 20cm squares, stick them in the drawer and use them as rags. We no longer need to buy dish rags or paper towels.

4. We try to regrow as many vegetables as possible. Lettuce, spring onion and potatoes that have sprouted have worked well for us. We also grow our own herbs, some in the kitchen window, some in the garden. But there's nothing better then cooking with fresh herbs or a hot cup of herbal tea before bed time (a big favourite with the kids)!

5. Less practical in the summer months, but during the winter it's wonderful to cook on the wood stove. I would keep a pot of hot water on the stove at all times if it wasn't for little clumsy toddlers walking around the house. Maybe next year ;-)
